William Tillyer: The Golden Striker and Esk Paintings

December 3, 2018

William Tillyer, Installation view of ‘The Golden Striker and Esk Paintings’ at Bernard Jacobson Gallery, 2018

William Tillyer turned 80 this year. To mark the occasion, the Bernard Jacobson Gallery is serving up a hefty helping of his recent work, which fuses the luscious paint handling of the British landscape tradition with this year’s must-have set of pictorial conventions: hard-edged abstraction. ‘The Golden Striker’ (2018) takes the painterly materiality of Constable and Turner and atomises it across a picture plane of plastic mesh, which acts as both surface and void; resulting in a strange sort of pixelation that sets thickly-painted passages adrift over arcs and squares of enigmatic, half-hidden geometry…

Exhibition runs until December 21st 2018.
