‘Harder Edge’ at the Hospital Club

November 5, 2018

Dominic Beattie is an artist fast making a name for himself in the geometric realms of contemporary abstraction: and with ‘Harder Edge’ he both curates, and exhibits alongside, a whole host of other practitioners of the genre. This show comes hard on the heels of the recent ‘Why Patterns?’ at No. 20 Arts; not to mention a good many other hard edge/reductive/geometric outings over the last couple of years. More and more artists have been reaching for the masking tape, the rulers, and the 6H pencils; this kind of work has cross-generational appeal, and commercial galleries are sitting up and taking notice.

So, Instantloveland wants to know, is this the shape of things to come? It would be great to hear from artists, critics and gallerists on the perceived pros and cons of the ‘hard edge’ phenomenon.
